ENDORSES PHIL MENDELSON FOR AT-LARGE COUNCILMEMBER
The District of Columbia Nurses Association (DCNA) endorses the DC Council At-Largecandidacy of Councilmember Phil Mendelson. DCNA represents approximately 2000registered nurses and other health care professionals working in the District of Columbia. DCNA is committed to promoting high standards of nursing and to improvingthe quality and availability of health care services for all people.
DCNA President, Carole Hennessey, R.N., remarked that “Councilmember Mendelson has consistently supported registered nurses in their efforts to improve health care and advocate on behalf of their patients.” She also noted that Councilmember Mendelson has twice introduced legislation in the DC Council designed to provide staff nurse staffing levels and limit the use of mandatory overtime.
Herman R. Brown, Jr., Esq., Executive Director, DCNA, recalled that “Councilmember Mendelson walked the picket line with us at the Washington Hospital strike ten years ago and he continues to arrive at nursing events to show his support of DCNA and the professionals we represent.”
DCNA supports the passage of safe staffing legislation designed to insure that every patient is cared for by the proper number of registered nurses. DCNA strives to promote quality and safe patient care by placing limitations on an employer’s use of mandatory overtime and by creating a safe patient handling and injury prevention standard. DCNA also recognizes the need to have independent and properly funded administrative agencies that exist to resolve labor-management issues. DCNA will look to continue to work with Councilmember Mendelson to meet these goals.
